چکیده

ABSTRACf. Secondary sexual ornaments as signals:77te handicap approach and three potential problems.Secondary sexual ornaments have recently been discussed in the context of biological signals, and the handicap principle has been suggested as a model explaining their evolution. The handicap principle predicts that at equilibrium, sexual ornaments will be honest signals of the male's quality. This is because the cost of ornaments to a potential cheater (a low quality male) will be greater than to an honest signaler (a high quality male), to an extent that makes cheating maladaptive. Accordingly, the cost of the ornament (the handicap) should be related to the quality it reveals. In the following, I discuss three problems with the handicap approach: i) It is difficult to determine the cost of the handicap and the quality it reveals. Nevertheless, I suggest that it is feasible and is worth doing. ii) It is not clear whether phylogenetic data can be used to distinguish between the handicap model and the sensory exploitation model. I suggest that it can be used only under restricted conditions. ill) Cheating (dishonest signalling) seems to contradict the handicap model. I will try to show, however, that some forms of cheating can be explained by the handicap model.

The Handicap Process Favors Exaggerated, Rather than Reduced, Sexual Ornaments

Why are traits that function as secondary sexual ornaments generally exaggerated in size compared to the naturally selected optimum, and not reduced? Because they deviate from the naturally selected optimum, traits that are reduced in size will handicap their bearer, and could thus provide an honest signal of quality to a potential mate. Thus if secondary sexual ornaments evolve via the handica...

Sexual Signalling in an Artiicial Population: When Does the Handicap Principle Work? 1 Sexual Signalling and the Handicap Principle

Males may use sexual displays to signal their quality to females ; the handicap principle provides a mechanism that could enforce honesty in such cases. Iwasa et al. 1] model the signalling of inherited male quality, and distinguish between three variants of the handicap principle: pure epistasis, conditional, and revealing. They argue that only the second and third will work. An evolutionary s...

Sexual ornamentation, androgens and papillomatosis in male roach (Rutilus rutilus)

According to the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis, males with attractive sexual ornamentation are more handicapped than their less ornamented rivals because of the immunosuppressive androgens required for the production of secondary sexual characters. Here we studied the predictions of the hypothesis in a wild cyprinid fish, the roach (Rutilus rutilus). We assayed (1) sexual ornamentation (...

The Signalling Function Of Eyespan In Stalk-Eyed Flies (Diptera: Diopsidae)

Genetic models of the handicap theory of sexual selection propose that ornaments signal heritable male quality, so females mating with the most ornamented males acquire fitness benefits for their offspring. Male ornaments are predicted to have co evolved with female preference to be larger, and so more costly. The key prediction made by the handicap hypothesis is that male sexual traits have e...

Sexual conflict and the evolution of female preferences for indicators of male quality.

Males and females have opposing interests when it comes to the honesty of signals used in mate choice. The existence of this sexual conflict has long been acknowledged, but its consequences have not been fully investigated. By applying adaptive dynamics methods and individual-based computer simulations to a standard model for good-genes sexual selection, we show that sexual conflict over condit...
